Former “Dexter” star Julie Benz went through the terrible experience that is a divorce and according to her it was her dogs – and her loved ones, of course – that helped her get back on her feet, emotionally.
“It was very painful and difficult. We managed to keep it as amicable as possible. That was a big thing for both of us. We were together a long time. I got a dog – I got Bamboo. That helped a lot. That’s why he’s so spoiled,” she tells OK! Magazine of her first puppy.
However, since Bamboo doesn’t handle planes so well, and since her work involves a lot of time spent in the air, she was forced to get a second one to keep her company while she’s away from home.
“My dog Bamboo actually does not fly very well, which is one of the reasons I got another dog, because I need to have a dog with me on location. Now when I travel, Bamboo stays at home with my adorable publicist Patrick, and I usually take Sugar. Sugar flies on the plane with me. I have this really amazing case that you can put your computer in as well. The dog fits right inside. It’s on wheels; it’s awesome. She konks out,” the actress adds.
However, having two dogs is not an easy task and when she felt overwhelmed and realized she couldn’t handle it, Julie hired a professional to give her a hand.
“When I brought Sugar into the picture, Bamboo’s training started to go out the window, and I was having a really difficult time. I felt bad because Bamboo had to adjust from being an only dog to having this cute little puppy around. I wasn’t cut out to deal with it myself, so I hired a dog trainer, and she taught me how to take control. I’ve left them at her house and she whips them into shape. I’m a terrible disciplinarian; I’m awful,” the “Boondock Saints II” star admits.
And since besides a proper education any pet also needs a lot of love, Julie went out of her way to make sure that her “babies” as she calls them, don’t lack any.
“I have about eight dog beds. I have dog toys everywhere. I feel like my house is a giant doghouse, and I’m lucky to live there. [...] They’re an important part of my life; they’re a stress reliever. When my dogs are in my trailer, so many people come to visit them that you just think ‘Wow, this is a great break in the middle of the day just to pet your dog.’ They’re too spoiled,” the actress further tells the magazine.
If Julie Benz is not a model pet owner, then I don’t know who is. She is clearly and example of celebs that genuinely love their pets for their affection and company and not because they fit as an accessory. You all know who I’m talking about. (Photo via Whedon)
